Robbie Alomar

by Alex Ciepley

As reported by The Score Bard, Roberto Alomar retired this weekend, ending a career which, despite a dramatic fade at its end, will land him in the Hall of Fame.

Alomar's career line against the Cubs (thanks, Rich!):

               ROBERTO ALOMAR
G AB R HR RBI BB K SB BA OBA SLG
46 169 24 2 19 17 17 7 .290 .351 .385
I don't have many specific memories of Alomar against the Cubs, but I do have a more general memory: Alomar, when he came up, was the player that in my mind was heir to the Sandberg throne as the best second baseman in baseball.

Looking back, I guess Craig Biggio (who will be at least as deserving of the HOF but will, I imagine, have a much tougher road to acceptance) could have had a few tough words for me and my canonization of Alomar, but what the hey--I've never been a fan of those Houston bums.
